Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment originating in China.

It is believed that energy known as qi flows through energy pathways (meridians) in the body.

Balancing the flow of qi is thought to promote health and wellness. Qi is necessary to maintain the balance of yin and yang, which are complementary opposites. An imbalance of qi in the body (too much, too little, or blocked flow) may lead to pain and illness.

Physical therapists trained in acupuncture insert needles at points along the meridian to restore the proper flow of qi in the body to help alleviate pain and facilitate healing in the body. Acupuncture can be used to treat:
  • Musculoskeletal and Neurological Problems
  • Arthritis
  • Joint Pain

Kinesio Taping (K-Taping)

K-Taping is a new service at Joint Venture Physiotherapy in Thornhill. K-Tape is designed to improve muscle function, eliminate circulatory restrictions, lessen pain, support joint function and reduce edema. The tape is applied unstretched with differing amounts of stretch according to the type of application. K-Tape can be left on for up to five days. The removal of K-Tape is relatively painless when wet, for example, in the shower.

Some conditions that K-Tape can be used for include:
  • Muscle injuries
  • Ligament sprains
  • Whiplash
  • Migraines
  • Low back pain
  • TMT pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
You can learn more about K-Taping online and at our clinic.

Shockwave

Shockwave in a non-invasive therapy use in rehabilitation settings to help with musculoskeletal injuries such as plantar fasciitis, shoulder tendinitis, whiplash, tennis elbow, rotator cuff calcific tendonitis, chronic inflammation, stress fractures and osteoarthritis.

Shockwave can help decrease muscle tension and inhibit muscle spasm by improving blood flow to hypertonic muscles and their ligamentous structures.

Shockwave can also help repair damaged muscular and ligamentous structures by improving collagen production and facilitating new blood vessel formation.

A typical treatment lasts 5 minutes per area being treated. Most injuries require multiple treatments spread several days apart to give your body an opportunity to do its natural healing in between sessions.

Individuals usually experience a significant reduction in pain and increase in mobility following the use of shockwave. Some patients may experience a little discomfort and bruising 2-4 hours after treatment. In some cases the discomfort may last up to 48 hours and in rare cases up to 5 days.
Our physiotherapist will assess your individual condition to determine if shockwave will be of benefit to you.

Private Yoga Sessions

Traditional yoga, at its core, is all about simplicity and about being natural. A yogi is natural, i.e. a state where the body, mind and soul are in unison. This leads to good health and equanimity, a state where we are happy and without anxieties, anger or stress.

Joint Venture Physiotherapy is pleased to introduce Neha Parekh to our team. Neha is a registered yoga teacher specialized in distinctive yoga training.

Neha will offer 60 minute private yoga sessions, which will include an in-depth assessment followed by a personal training session and an at-home yoga practice routine.

Co-Op Students at Joint Venture

Joint Venture Physiotherapy is proud to offer high school students in Thornhill and surrounding areas of York Region a chance to explore the field of physiotherapy with hands-on experience and knowledge of the workplace. Students travel out of school to our clinic to sit in on appointments and have a look at the behind the scenes of physiotherapy while earning school credits.

Co-op is a component in the specialist high skills major (SHSCo-Op M), which allows students to experience a range of customized, career-focused learning opportunities while working towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Students choose their co-op placement based on the courses they are taking in high school and their own field of interest.

“I always had an interest in helping people and wanted to take the opportunity to discover what it is to be a physiotherapist. I would not have received the same experience in any other placement. Paula has taught me so much and has enabled me to improve my communication skills. I looked forward to coming to Joint Venture every day. I take any chance I get to encourage younger students to take this amazing opportunity because there is no comparison between hearing and learning in class and actual experience.” – Megan, SHSM student from Thornhill Secondary School

Visit your high school guidance counsellor or cooperate education department or find out more about co-op placements by visiting the York Region District School Board’s Cooperative Education page or its SHSM page. We also encourage you to read past participant Karin's recent article about her experience as a physiotherapy assistant.
